Rocky Mountain National Park

See the Colorado Rockies up close at RMNP – spanning over 265,000 acres and yielding some of the most majestic scenery in the country.

Visitor Information

Established in 1915, Rocky Mountain National Park now welcomes over three million annual visitors to beautiful northern Colorado.

RMNP is surrounded by Roosevelt National Forest, Routt National Forest, and Arapaho National Forest – and is easily accessed by gateway cities like Estes Park and Boulder.

The Rocky Mountain parkland itself is open throughout the year, 24 hours a day. The park also features five visitor centers: Alpine Visitor Center, Fall River Visitor Center, Kawuneeche Visitor Center, Moraine Park Visitor Center, and Beaver Meadows Visitor Center.

Kawuneeche and Beaver Meadows are open year round – while the latter is a National Historic Landmark designed by the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture.

Attractions & Activities

Get to know the park first with a drive along Trail Ridge Road (found on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places), Old Fall River Road, and Bear Lake Road.

It may be best to explore RMNP by foot, as the park offers 355 miles of hiking trails. Summit hikes include the 4.5-mile hike to Mount Ida, the three-mile hike to Deer Mountain, and more. If you’re looking to see some waterfalls, check out Cascade Falls, Ouzel Falls, Alberta Falls, and several more. A few more trails include the quick loop around Bear Lake, or the six-mile trek around Bluebird Lake.

Rocky Mountain National Park is also ideal for fishing, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, backpacking, biking, and nature photography.

Those into mountaineering can head up one of Colorado’s famous Fourteeners – the 1,425-foot Longs Peak. Climbers reach the summit by the Keyhole Route – a 7.5-mile climb to the top of the Colorado Rockies.

We haven’t forgotten you history buffs. Check out the Holzwarth Historic District in Kawuneeche Valley. A 1920s-themed rustic ranch open to tours, and found on the NRHP.
